A thematic map shows the distinction between different regions based on a set of data being compared. In this map the water use in the different states is the theme being compared. It is shown by the gradation of color. The map isn’t concerned with roads, cities, or mountain ranges; only the state boundaries and the color delineating the amount of water consumed by that state.
